Hiragana

• The essential Japanese writing system.
  
• Phonetic: each character represents a syllable.
  
• All words can be written in hiragana and many textbooks require the ability to read it.

Hiragana is also used in furigana, a reading aid that displays the sounds of kanji characters.

Katakana



Like hiragana, katakana is a phonetic writing system.
These characters are used for foreign words (e.g. アメリカ -> amerika -> America / タクシー -> takushī -> taxi)
