If you need particle effects we recommend to use Pixel FX Designer. Btw, using the "break" effect on the "Fade-Out" tab you can simulate them. Check the crate explosion project included in the tool to see how it was done.

This app can work in two modes: HD or pixel style to fit your game needs which you can change at any time.
