Lost Planet 3의 주인공이자 굴착 기사인 짐 페이튼은 높은 보수를 받기 위해 위험을 감수하고 지구를 떠나 사람이 살기 힘든 척박한 환경의 E.D.N. III 행성으로 와 일하고 있습니다. Neo-Venus Construction(NEVEC)에서 일하며 행성의 식민지화를 준비하고 있는 짐은 코로니스 기지의 개척자들과 함께 미지의 지역을 탐사하면서 행성의 열에너지를 채취합니다.

NEVEC의 기존 열에너지 비축량이 점차 바닥나면서 코로니스 임무의 운명은 이곳의 천연자원에 달려있게 되었습니다. 짐은 이번이 큰 성공의 기회이자 가족이 기다리고 있는 집으로 빨리 갈 수 있다는 생각에 불안정한 환경과 토종 아크리드의 위협을 감수하기로 합니다.
짐의 다용도 굴착기는 일을 수행하기 위해서뿐만 아니라 수시로 변하는 기후로부터 자신을 보호하기 위한 집의 역할을 함과 동시에 실전에서 유용하게 사용할 장비들을 업그레이드해줍니다.
